WATERVILLE -- Mary Suplee Ormsby, 82, passed away on Friday, Sept. 14, 2012, at Lakewood Long-Term Care Facility after a long period of declining health.
Mary was born in Chester, Pa., on Jan. 21, 1930, to Louis and Margaret (Porter) Suplee. After one year of college, she went to work as a secretary for Scott Paper in Chester. For the rest of her life she never forgot a name -- she said it was a necessary skill for being good at her job, and she learned it quickly. Mary met Don Ormsby while working in Chester; they married in 1952, and in 1956 moved to Waterville.
Mary was an avid golfer, often coaxing Don out for an extra nine holes at the end of the work day. She was honored several times by the Waterville Country Club with awards that included Most Improved Golfer.
Mary was very active in the Thayer Hospital Auxiliary, dedicating her time to multiple committees including the TOSCA Fair, the Thayer Auxiliary Cookbook, and the hospital gift shop. Mary also enjoyed playing bridge, meeting weekly with good friends for cards -- and beverages.
After Don's death, Mary went to work with the American Greetings Co. Many people will remember her as the "card lady" at Mr. Paperback, LaVerdiere's Drugstore, and later Walmart. She retired only when she could no longer lift the boxes of cards, when she was well into her 70s. She did not stop playing golf, however. She moved to a condo on the sixth green of the Waterville Country Club, gathering errant golf balls from her lawn and collecting them in egg cartons to give as gifts to her golfing buddies. Mary spent many happy hours golfing and sharing a cart with her friend Adrien, a teenage golfer with whom she could discuss current movies and TV -- especially "South Park!" She enjoyed her lively phone conversations about "Dancing with the Stars" with her dear sister, Betty. Mary and her good friend Wanda had many adventures traveling amongst the islands of the Caribbean, even parasailing on one occasion --determining never to do that again!
Mary is survived by her sister, Betty Hurst, and her husband, Thomas, of North Carolina; and her brother, Louis Suplee Jr., and his wife, Pauline, of Pennsylvania. Though not related by blood, Mary's friends and neighbors always considered her a member of their family, and she will be dearly missed by all her many families.
Her family would like to thank Dr. David Preston and Debbie Hutchins, RN, who have provided her wonderful care through the years, as well as Oak Grove Skilled Care Center, Sunset Home, Lakewood Long Term Care Facility, and Healthreach Hospice.
A brief committal service will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, in the chapel of the new Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, 163 Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mary's memory to Humane Society Waterville Area, 100 Webb Road, Waterville, ME 04901.
