TOGUS -- Simon Simon, 90, of Waterville, passed away at the VA hospice unit on Aug. 1, 2012.Simon was born on April 24, 1922, in Waterville, the oldest son of Sam and Najabee Simon. He was a lifetime resident of Waterville and graduated from Waterville High School. Simon joined the Army in 1942 along with his two brothers, Moses "Skip" and Louis "Ace." He served in the European theater and took part in two invasions and was a three-time recipient of the Purple Heart. Simon was a longtime employee of the Wyandotte Woolen Mill of Waterville, where he was a weaving room supervisor.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Virginia (Crosby) Simon. They were married shortly after his homecoming from Europe and started their life together by building their home on Violette Avenue in Waterville where they continued to reside. They were never blessed with children, but loved each other dearly. He is also survived by three sisters, Helen Ballew, and her husband, John, of Waterville, Mae Burgess, of Winslow, and Sandra Chase, of Waterville; as well as many numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Simon was a wonderful man who would help anyone in need. He will be deeply missed by his family.
A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, 2012, at Pine Grove Cemetery on Grove Street in Waterville, with military honors being performed. Those wishing to send memorial donations in his honor may do so to the Waterville Area Humane Society, Webb Road, Waterville, ME 04901.
