Shirley Varina Garber, 89, of Waterville, passed away at Woodlands Senior Living on Feb. 6, 2013, after a long illness.
Shirley was born on Oct. 19, 1923, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the daughter of Robert James and Varina Olivia Wilson.
She graduated from Bloomfield High School in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and was a registered nurse at Victoria General Hospital in Halifax.
During her youth, she was an avid tennis player, sang in her church choir, played the piano and enjoyed skating on Chocolate Lake in Halifax with her cousins.
She married Lowry Frank Garber on Aug. 28, 1948. Over the years they enjoyed curling, dancing, traveling to the coast for lobster rolls and, most of all, family.
Shirley was a longtime bridge player, member and volunteer at St Mark's Episcopal Church and for many years a volunteer at the local food bank.
She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years. She leaves her son, Greg S., and his wife, Rhonda Garber, of Waterville; her daughter, Gayle L Garber, of Bath; two grandchildren, Kelly and Danielle; two great-grandchildren, Logan and Haley; as well as extended family of stepgrandchildren Patrick and Megan.
A committal service will be held in the spring.
In honor in Shirley's memory, donations may be made to the Waterville Animal Shelter.
