OCALA, Fla. -- Patricia Evelyn Randall "Patty" Gannett, 91, of Ocala died of congestive heart failure Feb. 12, 2013, during a short stay at Hospice of Marion County, Estelle's House. She was born on Jan. 14, 1922, in Ocala. She grew up in Conner, Fla., a community near Silver Springs, which was settled by her great-great-grandfather John Conner Graham. Her parents were J.W. and Catherine Lee Mills Randall.

Mrs. Gannett graduated from high school at East Marion High School, and received her bachelor's degree in 1943 from Florida State College for Women in Tallahassee where she met her future husband, Lt. John Howard Gannett, of Portland, Maine. They were on a blind date and went to see the newly released animated Disney movie "Bambi." They honeymooned at Maine's Moosehead Lake before moving to Japan after World War II where she and her husband lived for three years. They settled in Augusta, Maine, where they raised their family of three children.

Mrs. Gannett was active in the Augusta community. She was a "gray lady" volunteer for the Augusta General Hospital Auxiliary, volunteered for Community Chest, now known as United Way, was active in the Junior Chamber of Commerce and a longtime member of the Kennebec Valley Garden Club, with a particular interest in the Garden Club Park. She and her husband were active members in the National Organization for Women. Mrs. Gannett was also an active member of the American Association of University Women and the League of Women Voters. For more than 50 years she and her husband were active in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary in both Maine and Florida. Together they started Cobbossee Marina on Lake Cobbosseecontee in Manchester, Maine. She was also a Cub Scout, Brownie and Girl Scout leader.

Mrs. Gannett and her husband retired to Mrs. Gannett's home community of Conner. She started the John Conner Graham Scholarship at the College of Central Florida to benefit students from Conner.

Mrs. Gannett is survived by her husband of 70 years, John; their three children, Terry Gannett Hopkins, of Conner and Manchester, Patterson Randall Gannett and companion, Mary Lee Sanders, of Cape Haze, Fla., and Manchester, and Genie Gannett and her husband, David Quist, of Conner and Readfield. Four adult grandchildren are Tricia Dawn Hopkins, of Sarasota, Fla., Derek Randall Gannett, of Manchester, Jonathan Tyler Quist, of Portland, and Simon Baxter Quist, of Readfield. Mrs. Gannett is also survived by four great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Feb. 18 at the John Conner Graham cemetery in Conner. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pat and John Gannett Scholarship, University of Maine at Augusta, Office of University Advancement, 46 University Drive, Augusta, ME 04330.
