OAKLAND -- Nora F. Tuttle, 95, of 78 Fairfield St., Oakland, passed on from this world Dec. 2, 2012, in Waterville.
"Nana" to her family and friends, was born into a very large family in Grand Isle on April 5, 1917, daughter of Marguerite O. (Beaulieau) and Gilbert Ouellette. As a young child, Nora attended grade school in Van Buren and St. Francis de Sales Church in Waterville, graduating from Waterville Senior High School, class of 1935. Nora and her high school classmates met every year, and she cherished these friendships her entire life. With Nora as committee chairwoman, they held their 50th class reunion in 1985, and they continued to meet for many years afterward.
Shortly after her marriage to Norman J. Tuttle Sr., Nora moved to Oakland. She said many times that the first thing she did was to visit the Oakland Public Library, which soon became her favorite place in town. She was an avid reader, and loved the social atmosphere of the library. She volunteered at many book sales and fundraising events.
Nora loved to garden and could think of nothing better to do than rise early and spend the morning picking strawberries or apples. She was an excellent cook, and always had an apple pie or biscuits for shortcake ready for visitors. Nana's spaghetti sauce with its secret ingredient was often imitated, never improved, and always in demand at family gatherings. Later in life she loved to have lunch with family or friends, and spend the afternoon shopping or playing cards. Nora received the Boston Post Cane from the town of Oakland in April 2012. Nora enjoyed her family and friends, and was quick with a hug and a smile for everyone she met. Nora was an enthusiastic member and president of several local clubs, including the Oakland Area Garden Club, the Tuesday Club, and the MNO (Mother's Night Out) Club.
Nora was predeceased by her husband, Norman J. Tuttle Sr.; three daughters, Caryl Dawn Tuttle, Deanna (Tuttle) LaBrie and Cathleen (Tuttle) Fox; and her grandson, Michael Jonathan Fox.
She is survived by her son, Norman J. Tuttle Jr., and his wife, Nancy, of Oakland; her daughter, Mary Funada, of Hilo, Hawaii; and her brother, Robert Ouellette, of Winterport. Nora is also survived by eight grandchildren, Jaye Furbush, Andre Furbush, Ann Farrington, Alyssa Tarr, Trisha Borgen, Angie Miller, Christopher Funada and Colby Funada. She is survived by 16 great-grandchildren, Zachary Furbush, Jasmine Weeden, Michael Toms, Justin, Trevor and Cody Furbush, Adam Giroux, Noah Farrington, Seth and Chelsea Gosselin, Wyatt Tarr, Callie and Carter Borgen, Ryden Miller, Jonathan and Noah Fox. Nora had three great-great-grandchildren, Nora and Penelope Weeden and Jocelyn Toms. Nora dearly loved and will be missed by two very special friends, Ella Mae Van Husen and Dr. Sydney Tatsuno.
Friends are invited to visit from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, at Wheeler Funeral Home in Oakland. Burial will be on a later date at St. Francis Cemetery in Waterville. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Oakland Public Library would be greatly appreciated.
