WATERVILLE -- Lucille M. Ferland, 92, of Waterville, passed away at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Thayer Unit, on July 22, 2013. She was born in Van Buren on April 10, 1921, a daughter of Dennis and Isabelle (Violette) Madore. She was educated in Winslow schools. Lucille held many interesting jobs, such as working for Pratt & Whitney Co. in Connecticut, Butlers Department store in Waterville and last she worked for many years as a Ward Secretary at MGMC Thayer until her retirement in 1984.
Lucille enjoyed reading, crafts, shopping and especially entertaining family and friends who entered her home. She was best characterized by an upbeat attitude and an uplifting approach to life, remaining self-reliant and independent until the end of her life. Lucille loved traveling to new destinations. One of her favorite trips was to France to visit the ancestral home dating to the 1600's. Her most recent travels took her all around town in her motorized wheelchair with her devoted friend "Mike" who taught her the rules of the road! She always had a unique and refreshing perspective on life and her comments were often unpredictably humorous. Lucille loved each generation of her family especially the youngest members, Benjamin and Hannah who brought her so much love, joy and laughter. Since she had an ongoing love of learning, she was quick to promote higher education to all family members. She was adamant that we celebrate her life and not mourn her passing. Mom, Grammy, Gigi, Aunt Lou, Lulu and Lou; she had many titles. She blessed us with many memories to treasure forever.
Lucille is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Welch, and husband Bill, of Mexico, Maine; two granddaughters, Amy Welch-Whissen and husband Christopher, of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Sara Klingener and husband Shawn, of Haverhill, Mass.; two great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Hannah Klingener; a sister, Edwina Bouffard, of Florida; her nieces and nephews, Rachelle Horn, Ted Hallee, Janice Hallee, Diane Jackson, David Bouffard, Janice Till, Ed Bush, Gail Beck, Curt Ferland, Kathleen and Michael Madore and Yvette Bourque.
Lucille's family wishes to extend a deep appreciation to the staff at Thayer hospital for the excellent care and compassion that they provided. Also a special thanks to her dear friends Virginia and Maggie with whom she had many adventures at the Elm Towers.
