NORTH ANSON -- Leslie Wendall Oliver, 86, of North Anson, died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012. As per his wishes, he passed away at home with family by his side under the care of his wife of 56 years with help from Hospice.
He was born July 18, 1926, in North Anson, a son of Cyrus Madison and Autie Jean (Morris) Oliver. He attended schools in North Anson.
Leslie served in the U.S. Army during WW II from Nov. 3, 1944 to Nov. 19, 1946, in the European, African, and Middle Eastern theaters and received the World War II Victory Medal WD Cir 326. He later reenlisted and served in the U.S. Air Force till August 20, 1955.
October 13, 1956, he married Rose Bessey at the First Congregational Church of North Anson. Leslie worked as a truck driver for North Anson Reel and Sonoco. Leslie was a long time maple syrup maker, generously supplying family and friends. He also enjoyed camping and fishing especially at his favorite camp site -- Lone Jack -- which he stayed at this past spring. He enjoyed playing cards and was very hard to beat at the game "Sixty Three." He was an avid hunter who shot a 7 point buck at the age of 75.
He is survived by his wife Rose of North Anson; four daughters, Karen and her husband Lowell Piper, of Embden, Sherry and her husband Peter Rogers of Solon, Betsy Rogers and her companion Jerry Hamlin of Solon, Trudy and her husband Lew Young of North Anson; a son, Henry Chipman and his companion Wanda Homenick of Embden; a brother, Edwin (Gale) Oliver and his wife Phyllis of Madison; brothers-in-law, Vaughn Bessey and wife Vangie of North Anson, Warren Bessey and his wife Shirley of North Anson; sisters-in-law, Ann Leislie of Seward, Alaska, Merle Rancourt of Skowhegan; eight grand children and 23 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and a close friend Alberta Philpot of Embden.
He was pre-deceased by his parents Cyrus and Autie; brothers Ernest Oliver and his wife Libby, Kenneth Oliver; sister Helen Heald and grandson Hank Chipman.
At Leslie's request there will be no funeral service.
