SKOWHEGAN -- Judith A. Benson, 75, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, at Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan.
Judy was born on July 5, 1937, in Dorchester, Mass., the daughter of David and Aileen (MacLaughlin) Murray. She moved to Portland at age nine and skipped the third grade. She graduated from Deering High School in 1954 and the University of Maine, Orono, with a teaching degree in 1958. In 1959, she married Richard Charles Benson. They lived in Wilton, Fort Kent, Canton and Berwick before settling in Bingham in 1972, where they raised their family. Their first son, Todd, was born in 1961, their second son, Glenn, arrived soon after in 1962, and their daughter, Lauren, was born five years later in 1967.
Judy was a high school English teacher, play director, yearbook organizer, choral pianist and ski race timer. In 1988, she left Valley High School to become principal of Mark Emery Elementary School in North Anson. She was very involved with all of her students and cared deeply for their well-being and safety, sometimes checking in on them and taking them out over the summer. She would still be teaching to this day if she were able. Being with the school children and her grandchildren was the love of her life and brought her immeasurable pleasure.
Judy was predeceased by her Dad, David, in 1978; her brother, David, in 2003; her loving husband, Richard, in 2007; and her son, Glenn, in 2010.
Judy will be deeply missed and forever loved by her mother, Aileen Murray, of Norridgewock; her son, Todd, his children Trevor, Grant and Gus and his wife, Terri, with her children Bryan, Abbi, Curtis and Molly and together their son, Kody, of Skowhegan; her son Glenn's wife, Susan, with her children, Spencer and Stetson and together their children, Delaney and Cameron, of Dover-Foxcroft; and her daughter Lauren and her husband, Jason, and their daughter, Emily, of St. Albans.
A memorial celebration of Judy's life will be held Saturday, Dec. 29, at 11 a.m. at Skowhegan Federated Church, 13 Island Ave., Skowhegan, with a reception will immediately following the service.
Judy will be buried with her husband in Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
