JACKMAN - John C. Gilboe, 70, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 30, in Jackman.

Our dad was born Dec. 28, 1942, in Detroit, Mich., where he lived until he was 14. He then moved down South to live with his Aunt Debbie. At age 17, he went back home to get his mom's signature to join the Navy. From 1960 to 1964 he was the property of the United States of America.

He met his future wife, our mom, Dianne I. LaBossiere, while stationed at Quonset Naval Base in Rhode Island. After dating a while, they married. Four children followed: William, Deborah, Steven and Ronald.

Dad worked many jobs when we were young -- painting, gas attendant, mason's helper, whatever it took. Soon we moved to Plymouth, Mich., where he worked as a supervisor for a produce company. Later he moved us to Levittown, Pa., where he was a supervisor in charge of product distribution. His dream was to be a business owner, so in the winter of 1977-78 he moved us lock, stock and barrel to Jackman, where he and his partner, Ronald Surma, bought the Jackman Hotel. Two years later he and mom bought the Northland Hotel. Dad also worked in the woods, groomed snowmobile trails and did other jobs. He and mom bought the Jackman Motel, where they were most recently residing, and sold the Northland.

Our father, while coming from nothing but heartache and broken homes, was a great dad. He and mom married well. Dad was an avid outdoor person who loved hunting, fishing and trapping. He loved his family as well as a handful of friends. We all appreciate their friendship to our dad; you know who you are.

Dad passed at home with Mom. It was quick and painless; now he has no more pain. We all loved him and will miss him. A friend said, "Now he is hunting and fishing with good legs and a strong heart." Until we meet again, we will have you in our hearts and dreams. Dad is survived by his wife, Dianne; his children and grandchildren, son William J. Gilboe and his wife, Kelly, grandchildren Casey Gilboe-Lodge and her husband, Mark, Wesley C. Gilboe and Kevin E. Gauthier, daughter Deborah Petrin and her husband, Randy, grandchildren Raymond and Ryan Petrin, son Steven Gilboe and his wife, Deanna, grandchildren Timothy, Benjamin, Cody and his wife, Amber, and Brandon Gilboe, and son Ronald Gilboe and his wife, Melanie, and grandchildren Baylee and Austin Gilboe.

"Remember, Dad/PŽpre, while you are hunting or fishing, with a good heart and strong legs, keep Scott company until we meet again. We all love you."
