WATERVILLE -- Edmund W. "Ed" Marsh, 90, of Waterville, passed away March 26, 2013, at Woodlands Assisted Living in Waterville. Ed was born Oct. 24, 1922, in New York City, the son of John and Erna (Riechard) Marsh (and stepfather Clifford MacFadden).

Ed served in the U.S. Navy, Pacific Third Fleet, in World War II as a torpedo man. After the Navy, Ed joined Home Insurance Company in New York City, where he met the love of his life, Kathren, and married in 1948. Home Insurance Company promoted Ed to their office in Waterville, where the family relocated in 1956. He then worked at Boothby & Bartlett Insurance Co. for almost 30 years, retiring as assistant vice president.

Ed belonged to Pleasant Street Methodist Church, volunteering as lay leader, school superintendent and teacher. He served as president on Myrtle Street School and regional PTAs. Business activities included Life Underwriters Association, president; Insurance Agencies of Waterville, president; Waterville Kiwanis Club, president; and service with Community Chest. Ed was a 32nd degree Mason in Valley of Portland Scottish Rite, and Master in Suburban Lodge 1087 of Brooklyn, N.Y., with 60 years of membership. Fondly remembered for his outgoing personality and great sense of humor, Ed was always ready, willing and able to help others. He enjoyed working on handyman projects for his family and neighbors, as much as he enjoyed playing outdoor games with his kids and friends. He shared many happy days with his wife and children on Abbott Street, where he resided for more than 50 years.

Ed was predeceased in 1994 by his dear wife of 46 years, Kathren (Campbell) Marsh; but is survived by four loving children, Erna-Sue Gregory and husband Kostas, of Waterville, John Marsh and wife Joan, of Framingham, Mass., Arlene Blaschke and fiancŽ John Ganzen, of Vassalboro, and Julia Gagne and husband Scott, of Smithfield. Also survived by seven grandchildren, Nike and Konstantinos Gregory, Amanda, Sage and Cody Blaschke, and Nolan and Victor (wife Erin) Gagne. He leaves sisters-in-law Dorothy Marsh, of New York City, and Susan Rodgers, of Alabama; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Ed was predeceased by siblings, Agatha Yarwood and Henry Marsh.

The family would like to thank all of Ed's great doctors, nurses and medical staff over the years, and especially everyone at Woodlands Assisted Living for all their care and compassion.

Visiting hours will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, March 29, at Redington Funeral Home, 5 Park St., Waterville, followed by a service also at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donations in Ed's memory to Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, 163 Mount Vernon Road, Augusta, ME 04330.

A private family burial is scheduled for a later date.
