AUGUSTA -- Dan A. Gwadosky, 57, ended his long and hard-fought battle with cancer Wednesday morning, Aug. 10, 2011, with his loving family by his side.
Dan was born in Waterville on Feb. 16, 1954, the son of the late Joseph and Pauline (Moore) Gwadosky. He graduated from Lawrence High School in Fairfield in 1972, and received a bachelor of science degree from Thomas College in 1982, followed by a master's degree in 2004.
Dan had a long and successful political career for the state of Maine. He served 18 years representing his hometown of Fairfield in the Maine House of Representatives from 1979 to 1996. Dan was elected assistant majority leader in 1986 and house majority leader in 1988, before being elected Maine's 92nd speaker of the house. In 1997, he was elected Maine's 46th secretary of state and served as president of the National Association of Secretaries of State from 2002 to 2003. Dan most recently held the position of director of the Bureau of Alcoholic Beverage and Lottery Operations and served this past year as chairman of the National Alcoholic Beverage Control Association.
Dan was known by most as a man with a quick-wit and a joke for any situation, he always knew how to entertain a crowd. Dan loved to golf and did so any chance he got, all over the country. He particularly enjoyed time golfing with Josh in Florida. Dan loved to travel. He took his family on many special trips throughout the country and never hesitated to jump on a plane for business. He had a special love for spending time at his home in Florida and visiting Disney World time and time again with his family. In the summertime, he loved spending time driving along the coast in his convertible, boating on Tacoma Lakes and relaxing at Bayside. He found great pride in attending all of his children's events, countless golf matches and dance performances. He and his family were active members of Fairfield Methodist Church for many years. Dan loved the special relationships he built over the years with numerous co-workers that continued well beyond their time in the office. His time with NABCA introduced him to many wonderful people through which he had built very meaningful friendships across the country.
Dan lives on in the hearts of his loving wife, Cheryl Gwadosky, of Augusta, two proud children, Joshua Gwadosky and Jessica Gwadosky of Windermere, Fla.; his sister, Bonnie Gwadosky Adams of Monmouth; in-laws Richard and Joyce Norton of Oakland; brothers-in-law, Douglas Norton and wife, Kathy, of Byfield, Mass., Stephen Norton of China, and Timothy Norton and wife, Karen, of Cumberland; nine nieces and nephews; as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins.
