PALMYRA - Raymond M. Hersey, 82, died peacefully on Monday, Feb. 3, 2014, in Hartland.
He was born on June 9, 1931, in Milford, Conn., the son of Sandy and Maria (Montgomery) Hersey. He attended Palmyra schools and proudly served our country in the Navy during the Korean Conflict.
Ray married Shirley M. Stoots in 1955 and together they shared 58 years of marriage. He was employed by Irving Tanning for 51 years. He loved people and enjoyed helping others. He was a member of the Hartland Baptist Church and was a deacon and Sunday school teacher for many years. He served on the board of directors for the Central Maine Child Evangelism Fellowship and also served on the board of directors for the Sebasticook Valley Credit Union.
He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Hersey, of Palmyra; his son, the Rev. Steven Hersey and his wife, Bonnie, of Ellsworth; his granddaughter Angela Hersey, of Ellsworth; brother Hubert "Ted" Hersey and his wife, Shirley, of Middlebury, R.I.; sisters Elsa Morse, of Waterville, and Gail Gagne, of Pittsfield; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; and brothers Herbert Hersey and Robert Hersey.
A time of visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m., with a funeral service immediately following at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, at Hartland First Baptist Church, 10 Elm St., in Hartland, with the Rev. David Michaud officiating. A time of fellowship will follow. A spring committal service with military honors will be at Pine Grove Cemetery in Hartland.
