SKOWHEGAN - Donald E. "Babe" Pooler, 84, passed away Dec. 4, 2013, at Cedar Ridge Nursing Home with family by his side.
He was born March 1, 1929, in Skowhegan, the son of John D. and Maude (Bilodeau) Pooler.
He was a veteran who proudly served his country in the Army during the Korean War from 1951 until his honorable discharge in 1953.
Donald had a lifelong career in the grocery field, beginning in 1950, when he and his brother, Leonard, operated Pooler's Market in Skowhegan.
In 1965, he began working at Sampson's Market and from 1970 to 1991, he worked for Hannaford Brothers until his retirement in 1991 as District Associate of the Year.
During his grocery career, he worked many part time jobs over the years including 41 years at the Skowhegan Drive-In Theater until 2006; 10 years selling race programs at the Skowhegan Fair in the '70s; several years at the Strand Cinema in Skowhegan; 1988 to 2007, at Hight Chevrolet, working until he had a heart attack at age 78, and could no longer work.
He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, sports and movies; sharing all of these with his sons. Later in life, he was an avid reader and enjoyed watching baseball and football games on TV.
He will always be remembered as a hard working, gentle man who was loved by all.
Donald is survived and greatly missed by his loving wife of 58 years, Janet (Avery) Pooler, of Skowhegan; his sister, Mary; two sons, Jon and Joel and fiancee Shea; grandsons Zachary, and Brandon; granddaughters Michelle and Miranda; two great-grandchildren, Isaac and Macie; and a special niece, Donna. He was predeceased by sons Jeffrey and Mark; parents, John and Maude Pooler; and siblings Leonard and Evelyn.
