WINSLOW - Basil Rines, 90, of Winslow, passed away Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, at Inland Hospital in Waterville with his loving family by his side.
He was born in Unity May 18, 1923, the son of the late David and Beulah (Gower) Rines.
Basil attended school in Skowhegan. He served in the Army during World War II, attaining the rank of corporal and was an airplane crew chief. Basil was employed for many years by JJ Pelotte as well as Nelson Freight Ways.
He was also a truck and heavy equipment operator for the town of Winslow until his retirement. He loved spending the last 27 years in Florida during the winters and the summers in Maine with his two daughters and their families. Basil was a life-time member of the Winslow Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Maxine E. (Palmer) Rines, of Winslow; two daughters and their families, Joan and Edward Hogan, of Salem, N.H., and their three children, Loria, Edward and Michael, and Anette and Theodore Lovejoy, of Winslow, and their three children, Janet, Becky and Joyce; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; and by his sister, Beverly Knight, of Unity.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014, at Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm St., Waterville. Burial will be in the Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in Augusta at a later date. An online guest book may be signed and condolences may be expressed at www.gallantfh.com.
