SKOWHEGAN -- Joseph Martinez Jr., 66, passed away Aug. 24, 2013 at his home with his family by his side. He was born Sept. 21, 1946 the son of Gladys (Andrews) and Joseph Martinez Sr. who predeceased him.
Joe was raised in Dedham, Mass., and he spent summers on Vinalhaven. He served our country in the Army for nine years earning a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. After the service, Joe married Diane (McSorley) and together they raised their two daughters in Dedham. Joe always dreamed of living in Maine with his "three girls" and finally two years ago when his oldest daughter and her family moved north, that dream became a reality for him. Family was the most important thing in Joe's life. In his spare time he enjoyed being outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. Even though Joe struggled with his health, he never let it keep him down. He always stayed positive and happy no matter what life threw at him. He was a stubborn fighter, never willing to give up.
Joe is survived by his wife of 35 years, Diane; daughters, Louise and husband John Kay, of Madison, and Nichole and husband Derek Furbush, of Norridgewock; grandchildren Emily and Chloe, of Madison, and one little bundle of joy on the way; dear friends Ken and Jane Steeves of Norton, Mass.; and his constant canine companion, Abby.
Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. until the time of the funeral on Saturday, Aug. 31 at Smart and Edwards Funeral Service where a funeral with military honors will begin at 4 p.m. with Pastor Curtiss Kanagy officiating. Interment will be private at a later date at the Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Augusta.
Joe's family extends their deepest appreciation to Glenice who took such great care of Joe and to the amazing staff at HealthReach Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Somerset Humane Society PO Box 453, Skowhegan, ME 04976.
