1926-2014

PITTSFIELD - Arnold W. Bickford, 87, died peacefully on Wednesday, April 16, 2014, in Bangor.

He was born on Oct. 26, 1926, in Bangor, the son of LaForest and Angie (Pushaw) Bickford. He served our country both in the Navy and Army. He married Ruth Ann Killam on May 8, 1954 and enjoyed 54 years of marriage together until her passing on Feb. 16, 2009.

Arnold was employed by Northeast Shoe of Pittsfield until his employment with Cianbro Corp., where he retired after 22 years of service driving tractor trailer hauling heavy equipment to various project sites. He thoroughly enjoyed driving and had a keen sense of finding little roadside food shanties that specialized in unique food that he would share with his fellow drivers.

During the weekends, his wife, family and their circle of close friends would routinely gather and socialize by having cookouts and other functions. Annually, during hunting season he enjoyed spending time with his close friend, Harvey Martin, and others at Harvey's hunting camp on St. Albans Mountain telling jokes, playing poker and the other things they all enjoyed doing while in each other's company. He and his wife loved their Siamese cats, Ginger and Paws, and will be lovingly missed and remembered.

He had many friends and was often referred to as "Poison Tongue" for his ability to tease and "push the right buttons" until they figured out what he was doing, often times too late.

After retiring he enjoyed golfing daily with his ole friends, nicknamed the "Grumpy Ole Men," followed by their infamous tailgating in the parking lot prior to starting their daily routines. Likewise, he was a daily patron of the local Elks Lodge #2713 or what he commonly referred to as the "Office," where he and his friend Mike McGowan and others would joke with one another and play "Pull Tickets" in an effort to win money for entertainment.

For many years he enjoyed making beef jerky and distributing it to his friends and acquaintances in an expression of kindness; especially to his son and daughter-in-law's two dogs that were greatly appreciative.

He is survived by his son, Brian Bickford, and his wife, Tamara, of St Albans; four grandchildren, Ryan Bickford and his wife, Heather, of Corinna, Liza Whitaker and her husband, Howard, of Pittsfield, Patrick Bickford and his wife, Kacey, of Nashua, N.H., and Riley Bickford, of Metairie, La.; three great-grandchildren, Cole and Andrew Whitaker, and Declan Patrick Bickford; special cousin Marcia Bickford; and special friends,Blackie Reynolds, of Pittsfield, and Richard McNichol, of Hartland.

He was predeceased by his parents; loving wife, Ruth Ann Bickford; and brother Roland Bickford.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m., Monday, April 21, 2014, at Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield, with Glenn Nichols officiating. Following the memorial service there will be a celebration from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Elks Lodge in Pittsfield. All are welcome. A private committal service will take place in Village Cemetery where he will be laid to rest beside his loving wife, Ruth.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 141 Bar Harbor Road, Trenton, ME 04605, in Arnold's memory.
